Thank you Powell for your help today- really appreciate the rapid response and advice!!

We hope you all made it through the snow storm ok and are now back to business as usual!
Driving around today, we have started to notice many houses with ice dams beginning to form.
Ice dams form when melted snow refreezes at the roof edge, potentially causing water backup and damage to insulation. If you notice brown staining or blisters on the exterior siding of your home, that can indicate water getting in behind the siding; the brown staining is often the color of the wood pushing through the paint.

Quick tips:
If you’re seeing ice, carefully rake a few feet above the gutter with a roof rake during very cold days to reduce water infiltration.
Ensure attic insulation and ventilation are adequate to limit heat loss to the roof.
Keep gutters and downspouts clear and free. Make sure the ends of your downspouts have been shoveled out so that the water has a place to drain. If Dams have already formed, you can fill knee-high pantyhose with ice melt and lay over the gutter as shown in one of the pictures below. This will allow water to drain off the roof instead of backing up into the house.

Safety first: use a sturdy ladder and avoid icy surfaces. If you’d like a professional assessment of attic insulation or ventilation, or if you need help evaluating interior damage, please reach out to us. We would be happy to assist with insurance coordination and any needed repairs.
